The History of where our boys and girls take the field during the fall season...so much history and tradition! #ifthatfieldcouldtalk

Eagle Field

Originally known as Eagle Field, the stadium at Rose Park was constructed in what was then known as Fair Park and opened in 1932 and was built to accommodate the anticipated crowds that would come to see the 1931 State Champion Eagles continue their winning ways. The field was built for $13,000 with the used grandstands accommodating 7,300 purchased for just $2,500 from Texas Christian University, which had just built a new stadium and was looking to unload the steel frames.

The field’s inaugural game was the season opener of 1932 and pitted Coach Dewey Mayhew’s mighty Eagles against the neighboring Mustangs of Sweetwater. The Sweetwater eleven were to be led by future NFL Hall of Famer Sammy Baugh, but he was a non-starter due to a hip injury. So it was the running and throwing halfback—and future University of Texas standout—Ney “Red” Sheridan who was called on to do the heavy lifting. The stands quickly filled for the 3:45 start (lights allowing for night games were not installed until the early 1940s) on Friday, September 30, as 3,727 found their seats, ready to cheer on their team. But the Eagle fans suffered only disappointment as the state champs went down in a surprising defeat, 20 – 0. It was their first loss since Thanksgiving of 1930.

Besides the grass, about the only remnant of Eagle Stadium is the former Camp Barkeley barrack that served as the dressing rooms,
located at the south end. Eagle Field was replaced as the high school venue in 1959 when a new stadium, later named for former AHS coach Pete Shotwell, opened in east Abilene.
