Abita Springs Busker Festival

Abita Springs Busker Festival

Abita Springs Busker Festival Sunday May 22, Noon until 7: PM Abita Springs Trail Head Stage. We are proud of the Abita Springs Busker Festival. It has been going on for many years, and continues to grow in popularity. The festival features “Buskers” or musicians who perform on the streets for tips. Some musical greats got their start on the Streets of New Orleans including the “Father of Jazz,” Buddy Bolden, Louis Armstrong, and countless others. We had our eyes opened to the remarkable talent and skill of these young musicians when we hired our first group of Buskers, Tuba Skinny, to our stage. Hearing them and others and seeing the audience response gave rise to the idea that a festival devoted to them would be a good idea. It has turned into a very popular event. The Abita Springs Opry along with the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation present the music while the Abita Springs Museum Committee is responsible for the food, beverages and crafts. Admission is free. Bring your lawn chairs, spend the day, and listen to some of the best music around. Busker festival lineup: Esther Rose Band: Americana with a strong Country music influence. A new Group to the festival. She has been performing around New Orleans, and has a lot of great music on line. The Bad Penny Pleasure Makers: Returning to the Busker Festival Stage. Matt Bell and Joy Patterson are familiar friends of the Opry and the Busker Fest. Joy assists the Festival by locating and identifying talent for the event. They usually perform as a duo, but for very special events like this their group is expanded to a full-blown Jazz group. Matt is a super talented sought-after musician in New Orleans. Nickybob Shoulders and OK Crawdad: Pure honky tonk Country music. Nickybob is a New Orleans musician originally from Arkansas performed some outstanding Country music when he appeared at the Opry. He is part of the New Orleans country music scene. He was well received at the Opry and will be a great addition to the Busker Fest. James McClaskey Rhythm Band: Many New Orleans perform in multiple bands. They also break off into splinter groups that do different stuff than the original group. Robin Rapuzzi contacted us about this group. Robin is a percussionist, and is the washboard player with Tuba Skinny. This is another Jazz group. They are good musicians with a different traditional Jazz sound than Tuba Skinny. Looking forward to hearing this group. The Sam Doores Band: Sam has appeared at the Busker Festival as a member or leader of different groups including hurray for the Riffraff, the Deslondes, and others that were always very well received. This is his latest effort and his previous ones give us the promise that this will be a great performance. Tuba Skinny: The perennial close out act for the Busker Festival. They are also the seed that was planted that grew into the Busker Festival. They wowed the audience each time they appeared on the Opry stage. They have appeared as the close out at every Busker Fest but one, and many people expressed their disappointment at that. Tuba Skinny has a worldwide fan base. They have appeared at some very prestigious venues, but can still be seen on Royal Street playing for tips. Jazzy Bluesey amazing musicianship. We are blessed to know and hear them. As you can see, we will be hearing some really great music in our beloved town of Abita Springs. This has been going on for many years, and we have every intention to keep the great traditional music alive. We hope you take advantage of the opportunity to experience the Opry and the Busker Festival. You won’t be disappointed, and we are looking forward to seeing our old friends who have become regular members of our audience.

We were there yesterday. Great Music. Lots of good food.
We went to this and was enjoying it until we got back from lunch. We got there early, ppicked our spots for our lawn chairs under a sizable awning to be out of the sun. We sat there and listened to the first set of music, then we decided to go eat lunch. Like the people around us, we left our chairs right there, not worried that something would happen with them. When we got back, our chairs were bunched up in another location, and the serape was being trampled on in another location. I got furious over the rudeness of the people doing this to us. We were guests in the Town of Abita Springs, and this was permitted to happen. Had l been sitting there and it was happening to someone else, l would have spoken up for the owners who got there first. This is a big disappointment in a lovely, friendly town (?) for our first attendance. We had to sit in the hot sun, so we left after about 15 minutes later and a good Cajun band was playing good music.
Ok I was asleep. Got it! Rescheduled to 5-13-2018
With the threat of rain, has the Abita Springs Busker festival been cancelled & rescheduled. Or is it still on for today? I have never been & the pictures look as though its an all outside event. Any one have an input on this Festival?
Hi folks. Had to bite the bullet and make a final decision about the Busker festival for Sunday. I am pulling the plug. We are rescheduling for May 13th. I had to make sure we had the musicians lined up. Those are tough decisions, but the weather forecasts for Sunday have been very consistent, and very unfavorable. It is better to wait and not spend the day in the rain. I apologize if that posed a hardship on anyone, but this is a great event, and did not want it spoiled by rain. now we can get it going for May 13th. Thanks

The festival has been indefinitely postponed. We are still holding onto the hope that it will happen this fall. Stay safe.

Another fine Busker Festival poster from the inimitable John Preble. Thank you, John.

The clarinet glissando from Rhapsody in Blue sounds INCREDIBLE in four-part harmony

classicfm.com We thought the glissando from George Gershwin’s ‘Rhapsody in Blue’ couldn’t get any more epic – but then, we heard it in four-part harmony. Have a listen to this.

Singin’ and Dancin’

Free Live Music! Each year, we bring six of the best jazz and roots music groups from the French Quarter to Abita Springs Park. There’s lots of singin’ and dancin’, beer and food, and a classic, small-town Louisiana good time in an intimate setting. You can’t beat that!

The festival is brought to you by the Abita Springs Opry with support from the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Foundation. It is hosted by the Abita Springs Trailhead Museum and the Town of Abita Springs. The selection of performers is made by former Mayor Bryan Gowland with advice from the busking community.

Busking is the practice of performing in public places for gratuities. Our event does not offer this opportunity. It is a concert of regular performers from New Orleans who busk and perform around the world.
