971: Ray Charles – Modern Sounds in Country and Western Music (1962)

I thought this would be Ray playing in the style of country and western but instead it's him raucously covering the songs of those genres from the time. The album starts with a bang with the upbeat jump around dance beat of Bye Bye Love and then goes into a blues/gospel area that Ray practically owns. His backing band includes strings and beautifully harmonizing backup vocals distinguishing his style from straight R & B or blues.

amillionbands.wordpress.com I probably would’ve hated these songs in their original form but with Ray Charles at the helm it’s hard to not like.

972: Bill Evans – Sunday At The Village Vanguard (1961)

I'm just not into jazz. What makes this album particularly interesting are the insane bass solos, the ability for the group to easily maneuver from quick paced to solemn and slow and the live audience who you can hear chatting on the quiet some (shame!) and the clinking of their glasses in between numbers. Yeah, I said numbers. In jazz they are numbers, right? Bottom line: Do you like jazz? Do you like insane bass solos? Not howdy, do I have the album for you.

973: Muddy Waters – Muddy Waters At Newport (1960)

This is some classic blues at an outdoor venue where a lot of famous recordings were made. You can literally hear the wind blowing into microphones on some tracks. Every song sounds like something the Rolling Stones would later try to replicate. Muddy Water's voice is soulful and at times energetic but it's the guitar, piano and harmonica that really keep the songs interesting. [ 112 more words ]

Reptar – Amanda (2015)

My first live Reptar show was at an event for a sadly no longer existent Atlanta monthly known as Creative Loafing. The event was celebrating the best of Atlanta which included time of amazing food and performances by four Atlanta acts including Reptar of course and, the reason I was drawn to the event, Man Or Astroman? I can't say what this song is about exactly. [ 139 more words ]

ESE: #1 Crush (Nellee Hooper Mix) – Garbage

I, like everyone I know, was introduced to this song with this remix (although I don't remember the radio ever telling me it was a remix...) tha as released on the excellent 90s alternative soundtrack to the Baz Luhrman Romeo & Juliet. Man, there were some good tracks on there! Movie soundtracks were a great place to release killer songs in the 90s! [ 180 more words ]

I have honestly never known what Timmy Taylor from Brainiac has been singing let alone the meaning behind it. Unlike the more popular songs I'll encounter on my journey of Every Song Ever this one had zero annotations on genius.com. So I decided to add some of my own! In order to do this, I enlisted my English majoring friend Elise (thank you Elise!) to help me interpret what Timmy was singing about. [ 159 more words ]

ESE: 1-800-237-8255 – Logic, Alessia Cara, Khalid

Holy. Cow. The first three songs I've listened to for my Every Song Ever project have been about suicide. Ok. Here goes. I have tried to kill myself. I didn't try very hard though. It was a cry for help. I started taking anti depressants shortly after and woh boy what a difference. That's a whole other story but I felt like with three songs in a row? [ 147 more words ]

Music Lost to COVID-19: Dave Greenfield of The Stranglers

Dave Greenfield was a masterful keyboardist in a semi-decent punk/new wave group from the mid-70s forward. The Stranglers are best remembered for their ode to heroin "Golden Brown" which is cemented in our memories because of Dave's incredible writing and playing on the keyboard. The rest of The Stranglers catalog failed to recreate the magic found on Golden Brown but they still put in the miles and hours and were even planning a tour this year which was obviously postponed due to the pandemic.
