Current Tuesday listening: ZZ Top - Eliminator!

Eliminator is the eighth studio album by the Texas rock band ZZ Top. It was released on March 23, 1983, by Warner Bros. Records. Recorded in Tennessee during 1982, the album was produced by the band's manager Bill Ham and peaked at the top of the charts in many countries. "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Got Me Under Pressure", "Sharp Dressed Man", "TV Dinners" and "Legs" were released as singles. A Diamond certified album, Eliminator is ZZ Top's most commercially successful release, with sales of over 10 million copies in the United States alone.

The band wanted to expand on the synthesizer sound of their 1981 album El Loco. Influenced by new wave, Eliminator′s tracks were recorded with a combination of the synthesizer, drum machine and sequencer. The album used music videos as successful promotional tools — the videos for "Gimme All Your Lovin'", "Sharp Dressed Man" and "Legs" received regular rotation on MTV and helped the band gain popularity with a teenage fan base. A customized 1933 Ford coupe, depicted on the album cover, could be seen in the videos. Following Eliminator′s release, ZZ Top embarked on a worldwide concert tour.

Often considered ZZ Top's most popular release, the record was ranked at number 398 in Rolling Stone magazine's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and was listed at number 39 in The 100 Greatest Albums of the 80s.

After the success of "Legs", Eliminator was reissued with the song's edited single remix replacing the original version. The single remix was also used on many CD pressings. CDs manufactured in Germany by Record Service Alsdorf still used the original album mix. In 2008, Eliminator was remastered and reissued, with the addition of bonus tracks and a DVD containing music videos and live performances. The original version of "Legs" was included, while the single mix of the song remained on the album as a bonus track.

Another Canyon Memory.... the one and only Jon Lovitz spotted a few years back!

In April 2014 YES's original singer Jon Anderson teamed up with Jean-Luc PONTY as The Anderson Ponty Band and brought this unique live show to the The Canyon Agoura.

The Canyon was the second date of their Spring tour in support of their critically acclaimed CD/DVD release “Better Late Than Never” – the music created over the years by Jon Anderson and Jean Luc Ponty with new arrangements and virtuoso performances.

The Anderson Ponty Band also included Jamie Glaser on guitars (Jean Luc Ponty, Chick Corea, Bryan Adams and Lenny White); Wally Minko on keyboards (Pink, Toni Braxton, Jean Luc Ponty, Tom Jones, Gregg Rolie and Barry Manilow); Keith Jones on bass (Airto, Santana, Kenny Loggins and Jean Luc Ponty), and Rayford Griffin on drums + percussion (Stanley Clarke Band, George Duke, Jean Luc Ponty and Michael Jackson.)

“A breakthrough feeling came as I sang with Jean Luc’s music…… to be in a band again is very exciting on many levels…. we will play and sing our way around the world and have fun, for music is pleasure…. music is all that is.” – Jon Anderson

“Collaborating with Jon who is such a creative singer/songwriter is unlike any project I have done before. I knew that we had plenty of musical affinities to make it work, but the result is way beyond my expectations. It is also a lot of fun to reunite with these excellent musicians who played with me in the past — they really put their heart in this project and with Jon’s creative input we are not just rehashing the past but giving a new life to the music we started developing decades ago.” – Jean Luc Ponty

Thanks California Rock News for the photos, a full review of the show can be found here: californiarocknews.com/2016/05/01/anderson-ponty-band-at-the-canyon-club-4302016

[05/08/20]   when Life gives you lemons ,Make lemonade, and remodel the place.

Hi Canyon friends, hope everyone is having a great Thursday! Today we are cooling off with another one of our fav classic albums... George Michael 'Faith'. We had a show with the fantastic George Michael Reborn Tribute earlier this year and it reminded us just how amazing this album is!

A bit of history... Faith is the debut studio album by the English singer George Michael, released on 30 October 1987 by Columbia Records and Epic Records. In addition to playing various instruments on the album, Michael wrote and produced every track on the recording except for one, "Look at Your Hands", which he co-wrote with David Austin. A "black" inspired pop-R&B album, Faith's songs include introspective lyrics, which generated controversies about Michael's personal relationships at that time.

By 1986, Michael had spent five years as the lead singer of the popular duo Wham! and had grown tired of accusations that the group, which featured his best friend Andrew Ridgeley, was nothing more than a teenybopper group. After the success of Make It Big, Michael had grown weary of continuing the duo, and expressed to Ridgeley the desire that they should split up which eventually happened. Following the split, Michael began to work on songs that would make his first solo album, which would be titled Faith.

Faith peaked at number one on the UK Albums Chart and US Billboard 200. It stayed for 51 non-consecutive weeks inside the Billboard 200 top 10, including 12 weeks at number one. It was also the first album by a white solo artist to hit number one on the Billboard Top Black Albums chart. Faith spawned four number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100: "Faith", "Father Figure", "One More Try", and "Monkey", making Michael the only British male solo artist to have four number one hits from one album on the Billboard Hot 100. Michael embarked on The Faith Tour to promote Faith in February 1988, opening at Tokyo's Budokan arena, before going on to dates in Australia, Europe and North America.

Faith is one of the best-selling albums of all time having sold over 20 million copies worldwide and was certified Diamond by the Recording Industry Association of America in 1996. The album won several awards, including Album of the Year at the 31st Grammy Awards. Michael won three awards at the 1989 American Music Awards: Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist, Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist and Favorite Soul/R&B Album for Faith. He was also honoured with the MTV Video Vanguard Award. Often ranked as one of the best albums of the 1980s, Faith was ranked number 472 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
