CRAFT Beer & Wine

BIG BIG NEWS!!!
(I am the founder of and have been the owner of "Du Vin Fine Wines" in Alameda, California for the past 12 years, and I'm truly very excited to bring you this exciting news! Cheers, Dan Marshall.

Hello Everyone, I have some really fantastic news to report: after 12 years, Du Vin Fine Wines has become “CRAFT Beer & Wine”! It’s great news because I will be able to expand our wine selection (including Greek Wines) while also devoting more resources to craft beer. As you may know, I started selling craft beer about two years ago and the response has been fantastic.

Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere. I will be in the store daily. The new owner Russ, a true beer aficionado, and I will be building an outstanding selection of fine wine and craft beer to appeal to all enthusiasts. I will be the “wine guy” and Russ will be the “beer guy.”

CRAFT is a work in progress. But our wine inventory is fully stocked and we plan to continue to add more wines in December. We will be remodeling the shop in January to add additional wine racks and beer coolers. So you can look forward to an expanding selection of quality craft beers from near and far, and an expanding selection of local and international wines.

I would not be typing this note today without the enormous support from so many great customers over the last 12 years. I look forward to continuing to assist you with all of your beverage selections.

Please stop by to check out our new wines (and introduce yourself to Russ). And please visit our page at https://www.facebook.com/CraftAlameda for continuing updates.

I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my wine glass.
Dan Marshall

Okay then, let’s get started!

CRAFT BEER: Meet Russ. Russ is a longtime craft beer aficionado with a passion for great beer and the knowledge and travel stories to back it up. Russ recommends the following three beers, take it away Russ!

Thanks Dan. I’m really excited to be working with you. We’re going to do great things together! This is the holiday season, so it’s time to try some seasonal beers:

Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale ($9.99 a six-pack)
OK, this beer has been around for a long time. But honestly, one of my favorite things about Thanksgiving is the thought that this beer will soon be available! Celebration Ale is a marvelous example of an IPA, i.e. India Pale Ale. Generous amounts of malts and hops make it an aggressive, but still balanced, ale. But drink it now! Hoppy beers are best when fresh.

Dupont Avec les Bons Voeux ($11.99 750ml)
This marvelous been has also been produced for many years. The Belgian brewery, Dupont, brews this beer to celebrate the New Year. Avec les Bons Voeux (I’m told it means “With Good Wishes”) is a strong, complex amber beer with fruit notes competing with a nice hop balance. For the past twenty years I have brought a few bottles of this to New Year’s Eve parties and have created many new fans of this beautiful beer.

Aecht Schlenkerla Rauchbier Urbock ($6.50 500ml)
Most fans of German beer know about Munich’s Oktoberfest beers released in, um, September. But do they know about the Bockbier season in Bamberg. Aecht Schlenkerla is famous for its smoked Maerzen beer. But this beer, the Urbock, is only available from October to December. Its barley is smoked over beechwood for a smokey-sweet delight. If you haven’t had a smoked beer yet, start with the Maerzen ($5.99). But if you like that, step up a level to the Urbock! You won’t regret it.

WINE:
Meet Dan, wait, you already know me. Check out these three selections. These are three wines that I came across lately that really excite me. Enjoy!

NV Monthuys, Champagne Brut Resérve, France $29.99
That's right, real Champagne from Champagne France for under thirty dollars! I was surprised to find this wine recently and even more surprised that it actually tastes so great at that price. Monthuys is a small independent grower-producer and have been making Champagne since 1961. The wine has a wonderful touch of creaminess with excellent balance and gorgeous tiny bubbles. A blend of 60% Pinot Meunier, 30% Chardonnay and 10% Pinot Noir grapes. Highly recommended! It’s only $26.99 by the case. New Year’s Eve?

2012 Gavalas, Santorini White Wine, Santorini, Greece $19.99
I traveled to the beautiful Greek island of Santorini this summer and visited the family-owned Gavalas Winery. The family have been making wines on the island of Santorini since the end of the 19th century and own some of the oldest vineyards in Greece. This delicious dry white wine is made from 90% Assyrtiko and 10% Aidani grapes and has aromas of citrus with delicate flavors of peach. Three centuries of tradition and most certainly a taste of Santorini.

2011 Esterlina, Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, California $45.00
Wow, Now this is a great bottle of Pinot Noir! Fantastic aromas of cherries and red berries and complex flavors of red fruits and spices in the mouth. What I really love about this wine is that it achieves a level of complexity without being a big powerhouse. This Pinot Noir truly has finesse and would make a great addition the the holiday table. It's worth noting that Esterlina Vineyards owns the only vineyards in the Cole Ranch Appellation, which is America's smallest American viticultural area (AVA).

We are the East Bay's best craft beer shop. In addition, we have more than 350 European and California wines. And now we sell craft spirits!.

IT'S HERE!!!! BEER!
"CRAZY DONKEY" INDIA PALE ALE ($19.99)
SANTORINI BREWING COMPANY, SANTORINI, GREECE
HIP HOPPY KICK-ASS ALES, SO THE LABEL SAYS.
YEE-HA! YEE-HA!
Come and get it, now for sale at Du Vin Fine Wines. 1st time ever sold on the West Coast and in California. I tasted this craft beer at the Brewery on Santorini in July, it's super delicious! COME GET YOUR CRAZY DONKEY!!!

Tasting today with Maria Alvear. The Alvear Winery has been in her family since 1729, Spain's second oldest winery. Amazing quality wines from the Andalusian wine region of Montilla-Moriles, Sherry-like in style, but a completely different terroir. Their fantastic Alvear Fino is made from 100% Pedro Ximénez grapes and Maria says it's perfect with her daily lunch. She recommends always having two bottles in the fridge. Let's move to Southern Spain!

2008 FOPPIANO VINEYARDS, PETITE SIRAH, RUSSIAN RIVER VALLEY, CALIFORNIA $18.99
Louis J. Foppiano turns 100 years old on Thanksgiving day, Happy Birthday Mr. Foppiano!!!!! The Foppiano winery was the first winery in Sonoma County to bottle wine, wow! If you want to read an amazing chronology, log onto their website (www.foppiano.com), it's incredible. From heading West in search of gold, to being busted during prohibition, it's a great story. One of original producers of Petite Sirah in California. The wine might be a tad to big and fruity for the turkey, but truly delicious, and what do you think Mr. Foppiano will be drinking? The winery dates back to 1896.

2008 EIGHT ARMS CELLARS, SYRAH, "THE OCTOPOD", ALEXANDER VALLEY, CALIFORNIA $19.99. You might recall that The Tentacles Syrah from Eight Arms sold out in just two weeks, if you were a fan, then you will love the new release. Fat, bold, dry, juicy Syrah. Only 222 cases produced, come and get it!
