initially 2008 - 2011 :: revived in 2017
The brainchild of Lucio Menegon, the Ivy Room Hootenanny started, we believe, in the summer of 2008 as a musicians hangout and, for fans of the less than ordinary, a wet dream. Crazy music, shifting sounds, living room ambiance. The tiniest slice of Berlin right in the San Francisco east bay.
Every third Monday featured one featured act and three curated sets with five minute overlaps creating a seamless night of improvised outside music and spontaneous collaboration. Visual experimentation was encouraged, and circuits were routinely blown. The mantra:
comfy couches • delicious beverages • NEVER a cover • many musicians • total surprises
The Monday scene took root through the creative energy of Aram Shelton, Gene Baker, Andrew Conklin and CansaFis Foote supported by the free-thinking Ivy Room bartenders Ken McCown and Eric Leppo. In 2010, the scene grew up to Wednesdays, and any given Wednesday featured the best of outside music in a civilized setting, with occasional contemplation from the local press.
In May 2011, the Hoot ended its series at the Ivy.
Initially all about comfy couches • delicious beverages • NEVER a cover • many musicians • total surprises, the 2017 edition of the Ivy Room Improv Experimental Hootenanny and Social Club convenes once a month to see to put ten pounds of music on a five-pound stage.
We're also inspired by the now never-celebrated Ushi-matsuri festival, which the New York Public Library informs us includes:
"...the Buddhist-derived deity Matarajin rode to the temple on a black ox. Once outside, he read nonsense verses from a sacred book, being interrupted all the while by devils (oni) who capered about and made noises to try to spoil the ritual. At the end of the ceremony, god and creatures all went together into the temple. This festival is no longer celebrated."
So we'll perform this ritual in the second set each time we convene:
"The Matarajin deity (摩多羅神) dressed in white appears from darkness riding on a black ox. He climbs onto the altar in front of the temple accompanied by four oni. All of them wear paper masks. Matarajin starts reading prayers. The mantra is very long with a deliberate slowness. The oni and audience try to disturb reading. Nobody have any idea what it means, but if Matarajin makes a mistake, he has to read it all over again. Finally, Matarajin and the oni run down the altar and rush into the temple. The Japanese Tendai monk Ennin (794-864) introduced Matarajin to Japan from China as a protector deity of the Amida Sutra (ref Hiraizumi, Ennen-no-mai). "
