Louie's Lounge

Hey, this building looks familiar... 😉

(Continued from April 26) On June 22, 1938 the Martina Brothers Theater Circuit with theaters in Dansville, Naples, Albion, Cuba, Nunda, Clyde, Mt. Morris and recently purchased theaters in Arcade and Clifton Springs, announced that they were returning to the Village of Attica to build a new theatre. It would be ready for occupancy on the twentieth anniversary of the date the brothers, Charles and James Martina of Leroy, New York first started their motion picture theater careers in the Village of Attica on September 1, 1919 at the old Bijou theater on Main Street. In April 1939, ground was broken for the $50,000 theater to be known as the “Astor Theater” on the east side of Market Street. It was to have a seating capacity of 500 and constructed of fireproof cement block and steel construction. Carl H. Esperson of Batavia was the contractor and George H. Ketcham of Syracuse, the architecture. James, born in Valledoma, Palermo, Italy, had a connection to Market Street before he opened his modern theater. He was married to Miss Carmella Barone, daughter of Guiseppe Barone, aka Joseph A. Barone who came from Falcone, Messina, Sicilia, Italy in 1903 and settled in Leroy. Joseph A. Barone removed his family to the village of Attica in the early 1920’s, where he became a noted shoemaker at 27 Market Street. His daughter Clara Barone Young, became a prominent business woman of the village operating for many years Clara’s Dress Shop on Market Street. Her son Richard Young was a prominent businessman also on Market Street operating a gift shop and Deli for twenty years. During the 1970’s, Richard opened the Theater Restaurant in his uncle’s theater- the building survives today as Louie’s Lounge. They are all gone now. James Martina died in Danville, Livingston County, New York on Dec. 2, 1968 and shortly the “Astor Theater” that once graced Market Street closed its doors and ended the era of motion pictures theaters in the village of Attica.
