Traditional music performances, classes, and community gatherings for all ages

The One World of Omar Mokhtari: Concert to support the talented musician and chef Omar Mokhtari has dedicated himself to sharing the sounds and food of the Amazigh (or Berber) for decades. Now fighting cancer, the local community is rallying for him with a fundraising concert Tuesday at the Freight.

Dr. John, Legend of New Orleans Music, Dead At 77

RIP Dr. John Over a career stretching back to the 1950s, Malcom John Rebennack came to be a living symbol of the city of New Orleans and its bottomless musical character.

The Record Industry Expects a Windfall. Where Will the Money Go? With streaming poised to infuse billions of dollars into the music business, artists are once again hoping to get their fair share.

Our dear friend maestro Omar Mokhtari is in need of help from our community right now. He was diagnosed with cancer and has just undergone an operation at Kaiser Hospital in Oakland. He is recovering presently, and is surrounded by loved ones.

We are hoping to raise at least $20,000 dollars to help with medical co-pays, transportation, and alternative health care during this crucial recovery process.

You may have met Omar at Lark in The Morning, Sweet's Mill, or WOMAD, and witnessed him play mandola, banjo, guitar or drums. If you have heard his deep voice, its not easily forgotten.

Omar was born in Algeria, North Africa, where his is considered a national treasure. He was raised in a completely self-sufficient community of Berbers (the indigenous people of North Africa). He was a young boy during the revolution against France and supported the Algerian resistance.

Omar is a master musician and a profound singer who proudly carries on the traditions and music of his people. He has led workshops, performed in concerts and taught private students for over 35 years in America, and also has worked as an electrical engineer, pilot, carpenter, cafe owner, caterer and much more.

Anyone who has met Omar has assuredly been touched by his gentle and regal nature. Always courteous, soft spoken and welcoming, he brings with him the gift of music, wit, and deep historical perspective.

If you have anything to share, including knowledge, time, or resources, now is the time to step up and give back to our friend Omar.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

One-Man Band Suitcase Junket Augments Solo Act With Outside Influences on 'Mean Dog, Trampoline' (ALBUM REVIEW) - Glide Magazine

"Lorenz’s typical live set-up looks something like this – a folksy yard sale littered with odd trinkets and knick-knacks. His seat, a shoddy and beaten suitcase, doubles as a kick drum. In place of a snare drum is a tin gas can, often slapped by a small toy boot fashioned to a kick pedal. To his left is a saw blade and a cooking pan; they sound like cymbals when smacked in the right spot...Lorenz can play virtually any instrument, having studied piano, violin, saxophone, and guitar. Realizing he can’t bring them all to live performance, he’s found his unique way to operate within limitations."
