ONE WEEK ago, we put out an announcement that an anonymous donor offered to match up to $10,000 in donations through the end of the year. Well, we just sauntered on into the office today after a holiday break to and found that not only was the match 100% met on one week's time, but we have hit our end of year fundraising goal of $30,000!! This goal represents the ability to invest in new, participatory programs, resident ensembles, and open our stage to artists in creative development mode. Donations are still rolling in, which means better facilities, better care of artists and audiences, and an investment in the continuation of Ashkenaz for generations to come. THANK YOU for making this wonderful place possible!

West African Highlife Band @ Ashkenaz~ Jo Ro Mi
As a local community center and venue that presents music from around the world, we love to highlight the global roots of local Bay Area culture. Perhaps no one in the Bay Area music scene has personified that vision for as long or as effectively as Baba Ken Okulolo. Okulolo has performed and collaborated with Victor Olaiya, King Sunny Ade, and Fela Kuti – seminal pioneers of Highlife, JuJu, and Afrobeat respectively. These genres go a long way in defining the entire voice of modern West African music. Upon moving to the Bay Area in 1985 and establishing Kotoja, Baba Ken found his voice as an African artist working in the States. Over his 30 years in the Bay Area he helped establish the Bay Area as an international hub for music, and world culture. We are excited to welcome him home to Ashkenaz this Saturday at 8:30 pm.
