What a way to start the morning! Thank you Boston Magazine for naming UG the Best Wine Shop in Boston! We are freaking out!!

We are so proud of our staff - you are the heart and soul of UG, we have so much fun together, and you are helping so many people learn about and fall in love with wine. TJ and I couldn't - and wouldn't - do this without you!

This Friday, Saturday, and Sunday every single bottle of wine at The Urban Grape is 20% off.

Buy online via the link below or stop into the store and stock up now for those weekend trips, roof deck parties and long summer nights. Summer is too short to drink junky grocery store wine!

Such exciting new to share with everyone this morning! Last night, UG was named one of the Top 100 Retailers in America! Some of the most admired wine and liquor stores in the country (like Sherry Lehmann!!) were also winners, so it blows our minds that the comparatively teeny tiny UG was among the winners. We may be small, but we are mighty!

UG was highlighted because of our commitment to hospitality and customer education, and our innovative Progressive Shelving system. Thank you to our customer and staff (simply the best, on both fronts!) for making this journey so fun and rewarding!

After too many rainy weekends, we're thrilled to announce that we'll be at SoWa market this week with our 🌈PRIDE PROGRESSIVELY🌈 rosé pop-up!

We'll be located near the beer tent, slinging wine from 11-4, with rosé, Juice t-shirts, and books! Come celebrate Pride with us this weekend!

Tonight's tasting - Canned wine cocktails, wine, and whiskey!

Um, Gronk and Edelman's Parade Day Celebrations Were Extremely Cool

When Jackie Cain of Boston Magazine called TJ to ask for a description of the Hundred Acre Cabernet that Gronk was chugging yesterday, he responded, “It’s big, juicy, and yummy - just like Gronk.” And for that, he will always be my hero. We’ve got the 100 point Ark and the 99 point Kayli at UG. Plus many other yummy Cab options if you want to #drinklikegronk but can’t #spendlikegronk. Link to Jackie’s fun article below. 🍷 💪🏼 🏈 Here's what the Super Bowl champs ate and drank after the rolling rally.

We’ve got the WINTER BLUES. That’s why we looked high and low to find some additional 2017 La Spinetta Rosé and are offering it at $20/bottle or 25% off per case! Stop in, call, email, click on the link to order online, do what you need to do to bring this little bit of sunshine into your life. It’s like Vitamin D for the soul. While supplies last only!
(And yes, it’s drinking great. Better than this summer)

Redefining Wine Shop Design, Inside and Out | Wine Enthusiast Magazine

UG was profiled in yesterday’s Wine Enthusiast article on modern wine shop design! The shops profiled in this piece are gorgeous and we are thrilled to be included among them as the best looking shops in the US.

As we always say - wine is grown in the most beautiful places on earth, but sold in the ugliest. We aim to change that every day at UG! These modern wine shops create an experience for customers through innovative design, a welcoming atmosphere and a curated selection of labels.

It’s the first Monday of 2019, and TJ and I are sitting at our desks taking stock of anther record setting year at UG, and thinking about the type of store we want to be for 2019. I can tell you only one thing for sure - it’s going to be a good year!

2019 is already starting with the fulfillment of one of our biggest business goals - UG is featured in January’s Food & Wine magazine. It feels incredible to have our unique way of thinking about wine promoted within these pages. It feels important that two self-taught wine lovers are featured in F&W. TJ didn’t grow up with wine at his table. He didn’t even get into wine until he was 23. And yet, here he is. This all feels like what 2019 should be - if we can do it, anyone can. Wine is for all of us.

The theme of this issue is “Back to Basics” and that’s the theme of our year as well. UG is stripping it back to the basics. Statistics are telling us that Millennials aren’t into wine, so we are going to dive into that head first and demystify this beverage for everyone. We are going to keep pushing the limits on what wine stores are “supposed” to do. You know us, we aren’t going to stay in our lane. We are going to keep innovating, pushing, changing.

We can’t wait to get going. See you at the store, online, and in your homes. Thank you for supporting us year in and year out, and for shopping with real people and not box stores. It means everything! Link to read below!

Thank you to all of our incredible customers for another frenetic and fun holiday season at The Urban Grape! We will be toasting you all with strong cocktails and lots of Champagne!

As a reminder, UG is open 9-6 today and closed Christmas Day. Back at it on Wednesday to see you through the New Year!

Merry Christmas!

The winter issue of Edible Boston is out and it’s a good one! They shared their thoughts on the industry, drinking whiskey, and so much more - including holiday party cocktail recipes and entertaining tips! Please pick up a copy of this issue, support women owned businesses, and go visit these kick ass women bartenders at their bars this holiday season!!

This is very possibly our best week of free tastings - EVER - culminating in our Holiday Grand Tasting!
Tonight, 5-8 PM: Meet winemaker, sommelier, and author Rajat Parr
Thursday, 5-8 PM: Jackson Family Wine and Lamplighter Brewing Co. double header!
Friday, 5-8 PM: New to UG picks and Bully Boy Distillers double header!
Saturday, 2-6 PM: UG’s 8th Annual Holiday Grand Tasting is our biggest ever! Featuring 46 wines, six tasting stations, huge case discounts, and extended tasting hours. This is our most popular tasting of the year - don’t miss it!

When TJ and I opened UG our hope was to develop a store that celebrated community as much as it celebrated beverage.

Next Tuesday night, we are excited to do both with our Grape Out the Vote event with Rajat Parr and Jordan Mackay, the authors of The Sommelier’s Atlas of Taste.

Spend 5-8 on Election Night at a walk around tasting of 12 of Raj’s favorite wines from around the world - all of which featured in the book. Raj and Jordan will be on hand to sign copies of their book, and talk all things wine. This incredible opportunity is free and open to all.

And while, legally, we cannot make voting a pre-requisite for joining us, we do ask that you stop by the polls and cast your vote before heading to UG. Let’s shape our community together, one vote and one shared glass of wine at a time!

My to do list is overwhelming, so naturally I decided to pair the women of Ozark with a corresponding element in the beverage world instead:
RUTH is a Miller High Life Pony - really not any better than Bud Lite, but tiny packaging and a scrappy attitude. Just looking for a better life than being dragged down by the Anheuser Busch crowd. Ruth, you are the champagne of beers.
HELEN is an expensive bottle of Burgundian Chardonnay - steely, nervy, racy, lean and acidic. Worth every penny you pay for her. A collector’s item.
DARLENE is a garbage can full of grain alcohol - seems like a good idea at the time, a little Kool-Aid hides a lot of flaws, sneaks up on you when you aren’t paying attention, too much will land you in the hospital.
CHARLOTTE is natural wine - in a petulant teenager phase, hard to define, seeking emancipation from the larger wine community, sometimes hard to enjoy.
WENDY is the vineyard manager - the unsung hero of the wine world, dependable, strong, always brings more than you expect, solves problems before they get out of hand, but never gets as much credit as the more famous wine maker!

Another ridiculously abundant week of tastings at UG, so mark your calendars!
Thursday has both an Arnot Roberts Winery portfolio tasting and a Far From The Tree Cider tasting. The Arnot-Roberts is on constant rotation at our house - nothing beats these small-production wines from CA. And you know how we feel about FFTT!
Friday we’ve got the launch of Short Path Distillery’s very limited “New England Single Malt” Whiskey. When we run out of our allocation it’s gone for the season, so don’t miss this tasting! Also, lots of dark and delicious red wines to try too.
Saturday is all about wines perfect for your Autumnal gatherings, so if you’re having a Halloween party, definitely stop by from 3-6!
More info coming in tomorrow’s newsletter. Hit up our website to signup!

Three unreal tasting opportunities coming up at UG!
Starting tonight from 5-8, meet Will and Dave Willis of Bully Boy Distillers and taste their new, locally made Amaro. They’ll be signing bottles too!
On Saturday, Juan Muga of Bodegas MUGA joins us from 3-6 and will be pouring an amazing line-up of wines from this historic Rioja winery.
And then, on Tuesday, November 6, we invite you to spend Election Night at UG with the one and only Rajat Parr! Raj will be signing copies of his new book, The Sommelier’s Atlas of Taste, and hosting a walk-around tasting of HIS favorite wineries from around the globe.
At the risk of annoying everyone, we need to point out that these are three great opportunities to get a jump on holiday shopping with signed gifts. So plan ahead!

Local Hero Arrested For Trying To Recreate The Dirty Dancing Move In A Wine Store

If you try to recreate the lift from Dirty Dancing at Total Wine, you will be arrested. If you attempt it at The Urban Grape you will be our personal hero. Yet another reason to shop local! L.O.L.

Bribes, Backdoor Deals, and Pay to Play: How Bad Rosé Took Over

Yesssssss! This author is our spirit animal. He doesn’t name names but we will - he’s talking about Whispering Angel in this article.

The moral of the story here is that horrible rosé is flooding the market, so find a place (like UG) that prides itself on bringing in only the good stuff! A sommelier opens up about the shady business practices that are behind the rise of watery, terrible rosé.

**Wines On Sale**

Great choices this week: 20% off the 2014 Paradigm Merlot (“Juicy red fruit, blue undertones, hints of cedar and green tobacco. Elegant and I fussy, classic Napa style” TJ’s tasting note)

20% off the Bedell Cellars rosé from Long Island, and Angelo Negro unfiltered Arneis, aka Hadley’s favorite summer of 2018 wine!!
