Mission: Initially created to decrease crime in the area in 2007, MetaMovements' Salsa In The Park Community Programs provides summer jobs for youth and improves the livelihood of the community. Through dance and community engagement we transform the Blackstone Community Center Courtyard into a Salsa Soirée, with music by local Salsa DJ's, performances and food/drinks provided by community sponsors.

Our best wishes go out to the owners and staff of Stella’s Restaurant. It is sadly the end of an era and you will be missed. Thank you Stella Restaurant and Bar for supporting Salsa In The Park for so many years.

It is with a heavy heart and tears in our eyes that we announce the closing of Stella Restaurant and Bar. Today will be our last night. It has been nothing but a pleasure to serve Boston and especially the south end these last 15 years. We have made so many friends with employees and guest and will miss everyone of you. Please know that this was not in our control we had hoped to come out of this stronger. We will miss all of you very much. #restaurantclosing #southendboston #bostonfoodies #stellaboston

Dear Salsa In The Park community,

We miss you, we love you and we hope you are safe and healthy. Given the pandemic we are experiencing, It is important that we follow/adhere to the guidelines provided by health experts and our local government. For a little over a month we have been slowly taking the necessary time to plan and process next potential steps for this summer.

Today we were made aware that this summer we won't be able to gather in the ways we have been gathering every summer at Salsa In The Park for the past 12 summers. Please check out the article in the comments section that includes the announcement made today by our Mayor in Boston cancelling all large scale events, festivals and gatherings. With that said, please stay tuned for alternative ways that we could “connect” this summer. Together we will get through this...

With Love & In Solidarity,

Disability Rights Fund

From Kerry Thompson, Founder and Executive Director of Silent Rhythms, Inc. who teaches her lessons in ASL at Salsa In The Park every summer....

"Below is my piece for Disability Rights Fund on the impact of COVID-19 for members of the DeafBlind community. The piece also includes information on how to create accessible social media posts for those who are DeafBlind/Low-Vision."

In "Persons with DeafBlindness: The Left Behinds in the COVID-19 Era," DRF/DRAF Inclusion & Analytics Officer, Kerry Thompson, reflects on the dangers of leaving behind people with DeafBlindness. Her blog piece includes a 5-point action plan to support the community as well as how to create accessible social media posts for those with DeafBlindness. For more information, join the DeafBlind Community - COVID-19 Resource Group - a Facebook group specifically made accessible for those who are DeafBlind.

Being physically distant from everyone these last couple of weeks has been challenging and we encourage us all to stay socially connected. Here's an important guide created by our partner Silent Rhythms, Inc!!!

Help spread this widely...

Silent Rhythms, Inc. has put together a guide for the arts and culture sector on how to be inclusive of people with disabilities as we "physically" distance but remain socially connected. Please share.

In 2019, our weekly Salsa In The Park programming at the BCYF Blackstone Community Center Courtyard in the South End was supported in part by a grant from the Boston Cultural Council and administered by the Mayor's Office of Arts & Culture Boston through the Mass Cultural Council.

Join us in thanking the Boston Cultural Council!

We love our performers! One of the best parts of this program is how it connects local artists to the community... and gives them a space to shine!

We can't wait for summer to get here, so we can celebrate music and dance with our friends from all around Boston and beyond :)

Happy Birthday, Carven Boursiquot!

You've taken some of our favorite Salsa in the Park photos, trained some of our youth interns to take great photos as well, and are all around an awesome friend to MetaMovements! Have a great day spent dancing and enjoying life as you always do!!

Calvin met with Dr. Bo A. Byun who is a Deaf dentist with his amazing team in Marriotsville, Maryland. The team empathizes how important communication access is and it makes all the difference in her practice and Deaf clients! Everyone deserves full communication access anywhere, especially in a Dentist’s office!

We feel so grateful for the opportunities we've been given to honor the roots of our favorite dances... including celebrating the unique culture that developed in Cuba as a result of the African diaspora!

What a great memory with our visiting artists Yohan Corrioso and Yaimi Salas -- demonstrating Ogun & Ochun from the Yoruba tradition in Cuba. Looking forward to more moments like this to come

Orishas: Ogun y Oshún with Yohan Corrioso and Yaimi Salas! Elegua is in there as well, courtesy of Ozzy Rivera.

Oshun is the orisha of female sensuality and Ogun is the Orisha of metal and society. It's said that Oshún, lured Ogún out of the forest with her singing, dancing and natural beauty. They have an interesting relationship and it shows here in the video!

Curious about the history of our program in the DR before Carlos Gómez gets here? Check out this post from our travel page MetaMovements Travel Programs!

3 YEARS INTO OUR PROGRAM INTO THE DR... here are some thoughts on community and gratitude!

It's been almost 3 years since Alfred Pena came to us with the idea do a program with him in the DR! We had had many past travelers and friends tell us that they enjoyed our program in Cuba so much they wanted us to develop a new trip in a different area... and with the support of our friends at Rhythmology this next phase just felt right.

Since then we've had many cross-cultural experiences that have manifested from this decision...

🎶🎶 From America to the DR we've brought some amazing groups of dancers and cultural enthusiasts... (shout out to Alfred & Jay Styles for being some of the first to bring your students!)

🎶🎶 From the DR to Cuba, By-Bolivar Escuela De Baile, Carlos Gómez, Yernan Flores, and Sterling Cabral have joined us in Havana to see firsthand how our programs operate there... and of course to expand their knowledge of dance!

🎶🎶 From DR to America, we hosted Susan de Beras & Sterling Cabral here in Boston last summer for dance exchanges and performances!! (and Carlos will be joining us soon!)

With each interaction -- the students and travelers foster fond memories and a newfound passion for the Dominican Roots of Salsa and Bachata... and our friends from the DR develop as leaders, teachers, and coordinators!.

Looking back -- it's been a challenging journey... but it's a gift for us to see this symbiotic relationship grow and flourish over time.

All we can feel is gratitude for this amazing community of Americans & Dominicans who love this country and this program. We love you all!!

Check out these photos to see a few examples of the programming we've done in the past few years...
