Talking tap and Donald O'Connor with virtuoso hoofer Robert Mintz from Singin' in the Rain - DC Theatre Scene

Check out this insightful interview with Robert Mintz from DC Theatre Scene about his roles as Cosmo Brown and choreographer of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN! We agree... "virtuoso" describes Robert perfectly!

Mintz says about his choreography: “I wanted to pay respect to the original but also have a new take. Evan gave me free reign when it came to the dances, but he had come up with a wonderful concept to do the show with eight-people putting on a production of Singin’ in the Rain, but since it’s not the movie, I was free to cater to the particular talents of the cast.”

Our final installment of “meet the stars” of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN is all about Wood Van Meter as Don Lockwood! He’s a double Helen Hayes Awards nominee!

Wood trained in the BFA program Point Park University. This is Wood’s first show at NextStop, but he’s no stranger to DC theaters with credits at The Kennedy Center, Toby’s Dinner Theatre, Signature Theatre, Studio Theatre, Rep Stage, Washington Stage Guild, MetroStage and more, plus regional theatre credits! He was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award for Lead Actor in a Musical for the role of Joseph in “Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat” at Toby’s and for Best Ensemble in “Silence! The Musical” at Studio Theatre.

You may not know that one if his first professional jobs was being part of Hershey Park’s boy band, The Milkmen. To this day it’s one of his favorite jobs he’s ever had! He’s also worked at Celebrity Cruises and Busch Gardens. If you haven’t seen Wood on a DC stage, maybe you’ve seen him while cruising or visiting theme parks!

Wood says about playing the iconic Don Lockwood, “Being part of "Singin’ in the Rain" has been very special. It’s a role I NEVER thought I would play, but I’ve grown to really love the character. The story of how all these performers join forces to save their movie just puts a smile on my face!”

It's putting a smile on everyone’s face who’s walks in the door so far! (We had a sold-out first preview last night!) You don’t want to miss this show! #NextStopRain #NextStopSingin #SinginintheRain #NextStop #tapdance

More inside scoop on the stars of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN!

Next up is Morgan Kelleher playing Kathy Seldon. Morgan says about this role, “I'm lucky enough to be portraying a character I feel especially connected to—Kathy, a young actress trying to get her start.”

What does she mean by that? Well Morgan actually graduated from Catholic University *during* this rehearsal process! She is an actress getting her professional start right here at NextStop!

During her training at Catholic University, she was cast in productions such as The Threepenny Opera, Legally Blonde, Urinetown, Children of Eden and Kiss Me Kate. You may notice that “Singin’ in the Rain” is her first tap musical. You’ll never believe she just started tapping when she began college! (but the 14 years of Irish Step Dancing helped.)

You may not know that Morgan’s love of musical theatre came from an obsession with Disney—as in watching The Lion King five times a day kind of obsession!

Morgan says about being in this production, “Working on “Singin in the Rain,” a musical so many people grew up loving, was definitely a challenging and exciting responsibility! Finding the balance between honoring these iconic and beloved roles, and creating new moments based in the sheer joy these characters exude, was no small task. I've also had the pleasure of creating this inventive retelling with an exceptional cast, who has helped create the space to rediscover what makes this show so special.”

This won’t be the last time you see of Morgan Kelleher! Come to SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN and you can say, I knew her when!

First preview is tonight!

nextstoptheatre.org NextStop's Summer Theatre Adventures presents the enchanting modern classic from Disney, FROZEN JR! Featuring a cast of 30 local students and a professional design team. Tickets $15.

Meet the stars of SINGIN' IN THE RAIN!

First up is Robert Mintz, doing double duty by playing Cosmo Brown and serving as choreographer for the entire production! He's a graduate of Catholic University and has performed locally at theaters including The Kennedy Center, Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, and Olney Theatre Center, as well as New York and regional credits. He has choreographed at numerous local universities and assisted at Olney Theatre Center, Shakespeare Theatre Company and Constellation Theatre. He's been part of so many of our favorite musicals: West Side Story, Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Bye Bye Birdie, Sideshow, My Fair Lady, Crazy for You, On the Town, Mary Poppins, The Producers, High School Musical, Kiss Me Kate, The Little Mermaid, Sister Act, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers... to name a few!

You may not know that Robert got his start tap dancing when he was five years old. One of his first solo dance routines was to the song "Make 'Em Laugh" (which is a Cosmo song from "Singin' in the Rain"). He was dressed as a clown and in one part of the number he contorted his body; so he's not sure if, quote, "I made people laugh or if I made people terrified."

Robert said about his involvement in this production, "Cosmo has always been a dream role of mine, and I've been waiting years for a theatre in the area to put on a production of "Singin' in the Rain." I'm thrilled that NextStop's relatively small production, with a cast of only 8 actors, is able to deliver the song and dance spectacle that the audience will be hoping for, while adding in more humor and heart than one might see in a bigger production at a larger venue."

Don't miss Robert in SINGIN' IN THE RAIN, May 23 - June 23! Tickets are selling fast, don't delay! #NextStopRain #SinginintheRain #NextStop #tapdance #makeemlaugh
