Resisting Reform: The Struggle for an OPD That Respects Human Rights
Thursday, December 12, 2013
900 Fallon St., Oakland, CA
Administrative Tower Conference Room 850
Oakland, CA - On Thursday, December 12, 2013, OneFam is organizing a community discussion about the prospects for lasting reform of the Oakland Police Department. The discussion will include a panel discussion involving activists, civil rights lawyers, academics, and police officials. Small group discussions will follow the panel to involve the audience in a crucial discussion about how to strengthen the bonds between the Oakland Police and the community it serves.
Given the many ongoing discussions about police reform in Oakland, OneFam - in partnership with the International Human Rights and Conflict Resolution Clinic at Stanford Law School - invites community members, activists, students, teachers, protesters, politicians and police to join in a forward-looking discussion about police reform in Oakland. “Two years after the OPD’s shocking response to Occupy Oakland the police reform process remains uncertain,” says Stephan Sonnenberg, Clinical Supervising Attorney at Stanford Law School, “We hope this event will be an opportunity for a productive discussion about how to move forward.”
This event comes as the Stanford Clinic finalizes a report on the Oakland Police Department’s response to the Occupy Oakland protests of 2011 and 2012. The report highlights the critical need for lasting reform of the department. Detailing the vibrant history of protest and activism in Oakland, as well as its recurring patterns of police misconduct and abuse, the report makes recommendations on how to work toward a police department that protects the rights of all Oakland citizens and enjoys greater credibility in the community.
The event, titled Resisting Reform: the Struggle for an OPD that respects human rights will take place at 6:00pm in room 850 in the Administrative Tower of Laney College, located at 900 Fallon Street in Oakland.
